A day in the life of an Operating Standards & Training Officer (OSTO)

No two days are the same for an OSTO. One day you might start early at a depot or substation, working alongside field crews to deliver operating authority training, conduct workplace based audits, observe real world switching to assess, verify competency or to authorise. You’ll be engaging directly with Restricted and Limited operators, reinforcing safe operating work and network access practices, answering technical questions, and ensuring work is carried out in line with the Ausgrid Electrical Safety Rules and approved procedures. The next day you may be starting a 5 day office based training course, teaching and instilling the training material onto new candidates, to ensure all trained operators are confident and competent to deliver safe access to the Ausgrid network.

If you’re not training, you may be at your desk or often from the field, reviewing access permits, analyse operating activities, and document audit outcomes. You’ll collaborate closely with supervisors, schedulers and managers to identify capability gaps, plan reauthorisations, and provide balanced, constructive feedback that supports both safety and performance.

Clear communication is key, whether you’re delivering training, discussing recent safety alerts, or contributing to improvements in training material and standards. Your ability to contextualise the information for the workgroup strengthen the message conveyed. You’ll be required to read all Ausgrid releases, literature, related to safety, network access and operating, for your information, communication and comment on your concerns if necessary.

At its core, the OSTO role is about people, safety, and professionalism. You act as a trusted trainer, technical advisor and mentor, helping the business build an engaged workforce, maintain the highest standards of electrical safety while enabling crews to work confidently and efficiently. If you enjoy variety, autonomy, and making a genuine impact on how work is done safely every day, an OSTO role offers a challenging and rewarding career
