See yourself working here
We are seeking an experienced and analytical professional to lead the risk oversight and performance analysis of our growing portfolio of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM). In this critical role, you will safeguard trading operations by quantifying and modelling market and operational risks, validating forecasts and strategies, and ensuring compliance with regulatory obligations. You will be responsible for providing independent analysis and insights that strengthen decision-making and protect the integrity of our BESS trading activities.
In this role, you will be responsible for developing and refining robust risk models that quantify revenue variability and mid to long-term market exposure in the National Electricity Market (NEM). Your work will focus on understanding the impacts of spot price volatility, FCAS revenue risks, extreme market events, regulatory uncertainty, and curtailment scenarios. You will build tools and simulations to evaluate battery performance and earnings under a variety of price, load, and weather scenarios, integrating insights from forecasting and data teams to ensure high-quality, actionable outputs.
Your modelling will directly support strategic decisions on market participation and risk mitigation, informing bidding strategies in both energy and FCAS markets. You will also assess operational risks including technical performance, network constraints, flexible export limits, and dynamic operating envelopes. Staying ahead of market reforms, such as the AEMC’s DER integration initiatives, you’ll interpret regulatory developments and advise on their financial implications for Ausgrid’s battery assets.
Collaboration will be key to your success. You’ll work cross-functionally with teams in forecasting, finance, risk, governance, regulatory affairs teams, while also managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Your ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and confidently will be essential in driving value and alignment across the business.
What you bring to the role
Our hiring decisions are not only based on your experience and skills, but your passion, attitude and alignment to our core values.
We’re looking for someone with a deep understanding of the NEM and battery storage operations, paired with strong analytical and technical skills and extensive experience in Python, R, SQL, Power BI or similar platforms. You should be a proactive thinker with a passion for using data to solve real-world energy challenges.
Skills and experience required for success:
- A degree in a quantitative field such as Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, or a related discipline. A postgraduate qualification is desirable.
- Advanced knowledge of programming languages (Python, R) and statistical software/tools for data analysis. Experience with market simulation and optimization models is a plus.
- A self-starter with a proactive, positive attitude and strong motivation for continuous learning and development.
- The ability to convey complex data-driven insights to non-technical stakeholders and prepare reports for senior management.
- Strong ability to approach complex problems with quantitative and analytical solutions. Capable of working on both short-term operational tasks and long-term strategic initiatives.
- A high level of accuracy and attention to detail when developing financial models, analysing data, and presenting recommendations.
