See yourself working here
Ausgrid is seeking a highly skilled BESS Solutions Manager to shape the future of distributed energy. In this pivotal role, you will lead the technical development and integration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) that support our growing portfolio of grid-connected batteries. As our subject matter expert, you will define system architecture, manage multi-vendor integration, and oversee commissioning, ensuring every BESS solution is safe, scalable, and fit for purpose.
You’ll be responsible for the end-to-end technical solutioning of BESS projects, from concept through to operational handover. This includes defining system requirements across all components batteries, inverters, EMS, transformers, switchgear and protection systems, while ensuring alignment with grid codes, Ausgrid’s internal standards, and innovative DER/BESS use cases. Your expertise will guide procurement specifications, system interfaces, and design assumptions, laying the foundation for successful project execution.
A key aspect of the role involves coordinating integration across all Balance of Plant (BoP) elements. You’ll ensure proper functional performance across battery management systems, protection schemes, SCADA controls, and grid synchronisation. You’ll collaborate closely with internal and external protection engineers, design consultants, and OEMs to validate equipment specs, resolve interface issues, and address complex challenges like fault response, harmonic mitigation, and voltage regulation.
This is a highly collaborative position where you will serve as the technical authority and primary interface between Ausgrid and our design, engineering and delivery partners. You’ll play a critical role in vendor engagement, technical negotiations, dispute resolution, and ensuring compliance with all performance, safety, and warranty requirements throughout design, construction, and commissioning phases.
Commissioning coordination will also fall under your leadership, including energisation, telemetry validation, SCADA integration, and grid compliance / FCAS testing. You’ll work across field teams, protection engineers, and operational stakeholders to ensure a smooth and safe transition from project to asset management. You’ll also provide level 2 technical support post-handover, helping troubleshoot issues and coordinate vendor escalations as required.
With a strong focus on risk management and stakeholder alignment, you’ll identify and address technical risks across the project lifecycle and provide critical insights to internal teams including grid planning, strategy, and executive leadership. You'll play a key role in continuous improvement, capturing lessons learned and refining delivery frameworks for future BESS deployments.
What you bring to the role
Our hiring decisions are not only based on your experience and skills, but your passion, attitude, and alignment to our core values.
To be successful in this role, you’ll bring a strong foundation in Electrical, Power, or Systems Engineering, ideally supported by a tertiary qualification. You will have over 10 years’ experience in the power systems or HV/MV electrical infrastructure space, with at least 5 of those years focused specifically on battery energy storage systems or inverter-based technologies. You’ve likely worked across utility-scale renewables or grid-edge deployments, and you’re well-versed in how to make emerging technologies work reliably in real-world conditions.
Your technical knowledge runs deep. You understand the intricacies of inverter and EMS operation, know how to design and assess transformer systems with fault levels in mind, and can apply switchgear and protection systems with confidence. Whether it’s coordinating protection relay schemes or managing site-level integration, you're the one people turn to when things get complex.
Those with experience leading multi-vendor projects, navigating competing priorities, ensuring specifications align, and delivering integrated outcomes under pressure, will be prioritised. Your experience goes beyond the desk; you’ve been on site, involved in live commissioning, energisation, HV switching and fault investigations. This hands-on exposure gives you an edge when reviewing design packages, validating performance, and troubleshooting issues that aren’t in the manual.
You will be comfortable producing and assessing technical documentation, from detailed as-built designs to commissioning reports and O&M handover packs, with working knowledge of Australian utility standards such as AS/NZS 2067, 3000, 4777 and 5139. More importantly, you know how to apply them practically.
Strong communication skills are critical for this role, bridging the gap between engineering, commercial, and executive teams, translating complex technical concepts into clear, strategic insights. You will also be ready and willing to attend site when needed (Class C driver’s licence required) and bringing a proactive, safety-first mindset to every project phase.
